On the 6 April 2010 Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to a
fire in flat 72 Shirley Towers, Church Street, Southampton. During this incident
tragically two firefighters, James Shears and Alan Bannon sustained fatal injuries.
In every way this page, and this site is dedicated to the bravery of Jim Shears, Alan Bannon and their colleagues in Hampshire FRS that night who risked everything in the pursuance of the safety of others. Having personally visited Hampshire (HFRS) Headquarters both before and after this incident, I know their feeling of loss was both deep and saddening.
I am sure that everyone in HFRS has, and will continue to strive to learn everything possible from the outcomes of this traggic incident.
The site Technical Advisor was on duty the night of this incident. That morning he spoke to a close friend and colleague from Hampshire FRS. It was both distressing and harrowing that this could have happened when regional work that Hampshire FRS were heavily involved with, aimed to improve response to High Rise fires, was so close to completion.
